On 12th January 2010, Haiti's presidential palace was destroyed by an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale that struck the capital and its surroundings. In 2019, an international architectural competition is launched for the reconstruction of the Palace. The competition is conducted in two phases: a first phase with eight competitors shortlisted on the basis of expressions of interest, and a second phase with four finalist projects. The Terms of Reference of the competition, among other things, called for an identical reconstruction of the facade of the former Palace.
