Mongla is located in the south of Bangladesh, between the Ganga Delta and the world largest mangrove of the Sundarbans. Fishing and shrimp farming are the main activities of the people living there. Houses are small temporary huts, laid on a mud plinth, and rebuilt after each rainy season. In this salty-water environment, rainwater is the only drinking water source for the people and their livestock. The precious rainwater is collected during the rainy season in huge hand-dug community pond. The 15th November 2007, the tropical cyclone SIDR hit the south of Bangladesh taking the lives of more than 700 persons in the Mongla region.
